AECP In the mood for Color

In the latest Altenew Educator Certification Program (AECP) course I just completed, In the Mood for Color, the facilitator explains how specific colors evoke certain moods and how to design your card with color to reflect the mood you want to share with your recipient.

The card I created for my class project is intended to be a Valentine’s Day card and features the color red, the color of love and passion.

For my valentine, instead of featuring a traditional rose, I selected the Build-A-Garden: Grand Carnations stamp set. Growing up we always gave each other red carnations for Valentine’s Day and I have always been in love with this set. I started the process by stamping the largest image onto Copic X-press It paper in black ink and chose to color the flowers in a deep shadeds of red using Copic markers. My coloring details are below:

  • Flower Petals: R39, R37, R35, and R32
  • Leaves and Stem: G99, BG96, G94, BG93

After I colored my image in Copic inks, I decided to enhance the petals and leaves with a touch of color pencil. For this card I used Faber Castell Polychromos, and I used just four colors to enhance the details: Black, White, Ivory, and Dark Red. The pencils help to add fine details to your shadows and highlights a work easily with Copic colored images.

To make the image further pop, I stamped out a mask using masking paper and, after applying the mask, used Distress Oxide inks in the colors Hickory and Black Soot to ink-blend a shadow around the image. Further, to add a little sparkle, I pulled out my Altenew Metallic Watercolor Pan Set and added some splatter using a flat paint brush in Garnet to continue with my red color scheme.

To finish everything off, I created a red mat for the outside of the imaged and then a larger mat for my card panel using pattern paper in a red herringbone pattern. For my sentiment I wanted it to reflect love so I die cut a “Love” sentiment using the new Timeless Sentiments Set out of the same red cardstock as my mat. I made sure to use 3 die cuts for added dimension and I also added some sparkle with my Zig Wink of Stella shimmer pen.

I am “In Love” with how this card turned out. All of the red just pops.

Thanks for following along!
